My great-grandfather, Eluzer Finkelstein, was a Founding Member of the Stuchiner Young Men's Benevolent Association in New York. I inherited a plaque containing his picture and the society's title. I also inherited a silver Kiddish cup with the title of society engraved; the cup was used at my children's Bar/Bat Mitzvahs.

Too bad my grandfather isn't here to look at this wonderful website. Thank you so much for putting it together and maintaining it. My grandfather left Poland in the early 1900's, eventually making his way to NYC. His father, Velvl Zaborowski was a blacksmith in town. One of the many stories my father told me was of a metal tree his grandfather, Velvl, sculpted for the gravesite of a young Pole. I imagine it's still there in the Catholic cemetery.

I could not even start to thank you for this wonderful site you have created. I am the grandson of Abraham and Tauba Rosengart (Rosengard in the US). They immigrated to NYC 8 years apart. My grandfather first in 1913, then my grandmother along with my uncle Rubin in 1921. It is amazing to connect with their homeland and see where they lived. I only wish that they and their children were still hear to see this wonderful site.
Please keep up the great site and I will be back often hoping for more fact and photos.

Dear Sir:

Have spent more than two hours so far on your site; It is not possible to estimate the time that it took you to develop and maintain it. I am extremely excited about many features on the site; only one of which is the capability to contact other researchers of the same families, in my case the Szejnberg and Beker families. Thank you so much for this wonderful tool and source of knowledge.

I was very moved by your excellent website. My grandmother's family was from Szczuczyn, but until I found your site I knew very little. Her parents were Haim Nehemia Pollack and Miriam Pollack, who had five children, Salman, Reuven, Beila, Rivka (my grandmother) and Toibeh. All left Szczuczyn for the UK except Beila. She married twice, each time to a Rabbi and had one child by each marriage, a daughter called Fruma and a son Moishe Shmuel, but I do not know their family names. Fruma was about forty years old when Hitler invaded and letters from her stopped arriving, but my family never found out what end she or her brother came to. If anyone reading this can tell me anything about them I would be very grateful.

I went to see the exhibit at the WWII Museum in New Orleans, and I bought the book. I have always been interested in the Jewish people. I had a lot of Jewish people in my life when I was growing up who I loved dearly. They are no longer with me, and I miss them a lot. This is a wonderful website, and my life has been enriched just by clicking a button. Thank you so much. The book is wonderful, and I am teaching my grandson about The Jewish people. I want him to know how warm and kind they are.

My grandfather also went under the name of John Drenzek after his biological father, Peter was killed and his mother remarried. I didn't know the name of his town until recently when I came across his draft card with Szuzcyn listed as his town. I at least got to see pictures of where he came from. Very nice website.

My two favorite features are the studies of alternative town names (which can be a major research obstacle) and the potential to network with other researchers. Great Work! -- Brad Rubin

What a wonderful tribute to exceptional human beings. My grandfather Schmul Kyman and his wife and children all left for the US long before Naziism. But my Uncle Shimon stayed the longest and your site has a few pictures of him which certainly made me cry - remembering this erudite, gentle, loving uncle. He lost his wife and sons in the camps and when Chaya Golding came to America they married. So the letter that is on your site is from my Aunt Helen whom I knew as a dynamic, vivacious woman. I cannot believe she lived through all that is outlined in her letter. We were very close and she took me shopping in Manhattan until I was well into my late teens. She was great fun but, oh, my Uncle Shimon - he was such a fine, soft-spoken man whose heart was broken as he never got over the loss of his first wife and his sons.
Thank you so much for this excellent site. I wish you were able to gather more pictures; they are such treasures.

Dear Mr. Gutstein:

Thank you for doing the site, "In Memory of Szczuczyn, Poland." I am writing a fictional account of a family that migrated to the States during that period when so many did and only luck and your hard work had me find this treasure of a site. Thank you. Fay's story, is it Felice, is by far more moving than my fiction although my work has a different emphasis. Please thank the person for me for writing it. Is she still alive? I think her plight, w/ its realism re the Polish neighbors, and her fantastic Mother, and equally fabulous young girl that she was, and the pitching in of all the relatives, would make a wonderful book for Young Adults.

Thanks again.

Delighted to find this most interesting site at last. Well done! We're trying to find out more about the Gersons (last known address 5 Church St.) Particularly Harris (Zvi Meir) Gerson and his sons Isaac and Joseph (my own great-grandfather.) Our main interest is in the family during the 19th century.

I am sure that all of us descendants of Szczuczyn and Grajewo ancestors - the Wapinskis - will treasure the work done.

Dear Jose,

I thank you very much to give me a chance to look through the past inhabitants of Szczuczyn where I was born, raised, and went to grammar school, and enjoyed my close, warm friends, who if alive, would remember me well. Alas most of the young and old no longer inhabit our living world. Time heals all suffering from the past and it was a joy to contemplate the photographs of these people. Thanks to you, dear Mr. Gutstein, your well documented and aesthetically arranged work gave me great pleasure for which I thank you immensely. With best wishes and gratitude, Felice Massie

I just went through all the pictures and I have to tell you that they brought tears to my eyes just for the fact that most of them are not here and did not live long enough to enjoy the life they had in Poland. I have similar pictures from Wisnicz where my father's uncles and children & grandchildren that he never saw or knew lived. One of the surviving grandchildren out of the 40 sends me pictures from Israel where the lucky ones live. Whenever I see these pictures all I can think of is that a way of life which was so beautiful has been lost forever.

Dear Jose,

The Szczuczyn website is a real historical document and a major accomplishment on your part. The pictures will give everyone an important insight into the way their ancestors lived. I'm sure many people have found "new" relatives already or now know what long lost relatives looked like! I'm even prouder that almost all the pictures were made by my Grandfather, Zalman Kaplan, Szczuczyn's photographer from 1895 until 1941. Congratulations and sincere thanks for all your help.

My husband and I have spent this evening travelling through Szczuczyn on your wonderful website - and have much yet to read. We can not believe how much information you have gathered to share with those of us who have links to this town. The photos are a treasure. We are so grateful and excited that the few stories we have, are being confirmed through your meticulous research and we can begin through the maps and pictures and stories to visualise and enlarge the stories we have. Thank you so very much for your dedicated work to preserve our history for us, our children and grandchildren.

Dear Jose, My family and I want to thank you for your Szczuczyn website. The sensitive and comprehensive presentation generated an excitement in accessing and appreciating my mother's roots. My mother, Esther Kyman Cooper and her sister, Lily Kyman Goldberg, came to America from Szczuczyn in 1930 when they were in their early 20's. Your website filled in much of what their early life was like. Have been to the museum exhibit as well. Saw photos of family and friends of my mother. All this has opened much for me and my family. Was able to find out about all of this through the help of Carolyn Kaiman Rosenstein. Many thanks again. Gene Cooper (Grandson of Shaiyoudell and Rachel Kyman)

Thank you. I already knew that the Denemarks were vital in the town (especially Yankl Denemark) but your site only reinforced that fact in all its sadness. I have one small photo of Yankl Denemark and another relative taken in 1932 (or 37 -- his handwriting was kind of messy to decipher) on what appears to be an Hakshara. I will try and get a copy to you. I'm still trying to learn how Yankl earned a living. He seemed to be very busy on committees, etc. Thank you.
